Stublach Gas Storage Project

Storengy UK is currently developing the Stublach Gas Storage Project, a salt cavern storage facility in Cheshire. Once completed, the scheme will be one of the main storage facilities in the country and will enhance the security of supply to the UK market. Up to 28 caverns will be created, the first 10 of which are currently being solution-mined and will be commissioned in 2013. Total storage capacity could reach 400 million cubic meters of natural gas. Thanks to very high injection and withdrawal rates – up to 33 million cubic meters per day – the store can be filled up and emptied very quickly, allowing users to churn their gas many times during the year.
The brine produced during the solution mining process is used locally by INEOS Enterprises for their customers in Cheshire.
The total development investment budget is estimated at around £350 million. About 1 million man-hours have been expended so far and the construction activities have had beneficial impacts on the local economy.
North East Storage
BGE (Northern Ireland), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bord Gáis, and Storengy have formed a consortium to carry out investigations to identify if there are salt layers deep underground in the Larne Borough Council area (Northern Ireland), which could potentially be used for natural gas storage in the future.
